Goals
- Maintain roadsides to their current standard making improvements in safety where possible.
- Ensure works on roadsides are conducted using best practices to manage risks to people and the environment.
- Undertake activities that reduce risks posed by vegetation, bushfire, pest plants and animals and inadequate drainage
- Be active in demonstrating a positive role in roadside management to others.
- Legislative compliance - ensuring that council staff, contractors and permitted users of roadsides comply with relevant legislation aimed at protecting roadside values. This includes the EPBC Act 1999, the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, Aboriginal and Heritage Act 2006, Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994, the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and relevant components of the local planning scheme.
- Protecting and enhancing roadside values - through targeted activities. This includes e.g. identifying sites that are priorities for protection, and undertaking actions such as revegetation and weed control.
- Improving awareness and understanding of roadside values - by producing, collating and sharing information (through e.g. online materials, interpretive signage etc) Council aims to increase awareness and understanding of the key values on roadsides amongst partner organisations, other stakeholders and the wider public.
- Sharing information and facilitating community engagement: ensuring that Council is a trusted source of information and guidance on roadside values and permitted activities.
- Ensuring evidence-based best practice is embedded in management activities carried out by Council, Council-managed contractors and utilities, as well as forming the basis of information and guidance on managing roadside values.
- Monitoring, evaluating and improving Council’s performance in delivering the objectives set out in the plan.
Goal 1: Roadsides are safe and all roadside users understand their responsibilities
Roadsides need to be well managed and users (Council and others e.g. service providers and landholders) need to know their responsibilities, under Federal and State government legislation and local laws, when working on roadsides.
