Consultation has concluded.
In response to feedback from the Derrinallum community during previous consultation, Council has redesigned the proposed toilet facility.
The new design has separate male and female toilets and privacy screens installed. Accessible and ambulant toilet remain unisex.
Feedback provided during previous consultation suggested the heritage value of the facility was of high importance to the community. As a result, Council acquired advice from a heritage architect. The consultant advised that due a number of changes since the structure was built, it was not considered of sufficient heritage significance to warrant the retention of the building. In line with this advice, it was not considered feasible to refurbish the existing facility because works required would further alter the building's aesthetic significance. For this reason, the heritage architect supported removal of the building.
To retain the significance of the building, which was of high importance to the Derrinallum community, Council has considered the re-use of elements from the current facility to reinstate the footpath, landscaping works or for garden beds. Colours for the new facility have also been selected to ensure it remains sympathetic to the building surrounds.
The design reflecting the changes was provided for consideration of the community:
A drop-in session was held by Council officers on Thursday 28 January 2021 from 2 pm on site at the toilet block to explain the project and answer questions from the Derrinallum community.
Works started on Tuesday 11 May 2021 and finish in July 2021.
The new toilet block was constructed off site and installed on the site of the existing toilet in the town avenue. Bricks from the existing building were retained and used for landscaping and garden beds.
The $175,000 project was funded by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LCRI) and Corangamite Shire.
